This page contains the original maps and the various replans, as well as a link to the detailed map of the final route.
Original plan: 31 July 2020.
Codenamed “Pompey to Pompeii”. Out via Corsica and Sardinia, then over to Naples and back up through Italy. Let’s see how many tourist attractions we can visit which would usually be jam-packed with coaches.
Replan 1: 8 August 2020.
We simplified the logistics by removing Corsica/Sardinia/Naples, because the ferries were proving a bit difficult to coordinate. This gave us the time to do much more northern Italy and general hilly stuff, following Hermann’s triumphs over the Col de Chat and Col de Mont Cenis. Also we have booked a ferry from the Hook of Holland as it looks like the UK government might declare France Out Of Bounds (pot kettle etc).
Replan 2: 13 August 2020.
Heads full of Ravenna’s mosaics, we are making our way through the Sud Tyrol. With the UK government’s latest decision to declare the Netherlands, as well as France, a Covid No-Go-Zone, we are now free to go through any country we want to on the way home because the results will be the same. Belgium here we come! Beer and frites and mayonnaise!! Hurrah!!!
The Final Version
We spent more time in Germany than we had originally planned and it was great fun. Fellow nuthatches have filled Hermann’s boot with Guides to Truly Bonkers Stuff to See in Germany, and we know it will be easy to return. Meanwhile in the parallel universe that is the UK Government Decision Making Process This Is Definitely Our Last Decision No U-Turns, the latest guidance says that if you go through Stinky Countries straight to the port without having a Social Interaction with anyone then you are ok for the quarantine so the Belgian Mayonnaise experience is postponed to the next visit.
